Phil Foden has emerged as Manchester City's standout player this season and a deserving player of the year, and he has a good chance of running the show at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.  It is now time for him to receive full recognition and respect from his country.

Foden remains in the group of top-tier English footballers associated with outstanding performances for his team. In his instance, it's because the standards he's set while wearing a Manchester City jersey are so high that England's performances have fallen short in contrast.

Foden has yet to produce consistently for Gareth Southgate, and it never felt like he was totally trusted during the last World Cup.  Foden as well as Bellingham are different types of footballers, but there are features of the City player's playing that distinguish him from anyone England has ever produced. There is a parallel to be drawn with Jude Bellingham, who is regarded as one of the finest players in the world, a potential Ballon d'Or winner if Real Madrid wins the UEFA Champions League.

Bellingham continues the legacy of complete, multidimensional midfielders. Tactically, he is Southgate's dream midfielder for the summer event. He flourished as a No. 10 for Real Madrid, looked phenomenal as a No. 8 for Borussia Dortmund, and was capable of playing No. 6 later in his playing career.

What did Jamie Carragher say about Phil Foden’s abilities?

While writing a featured piece for the Telegraph, Jamie Carragher compared Phil Foden to one of the greatest players of all-time. He wrote, “With regards to Foden, I am not sure England have ever had a similar style of player of such a level. Foden has more in common with the typical Spanish or Portuguese players, his technique setting him apart.”

The former Liverpool defender added, The highest praise I can offer is whenever I watch Foden and see that first touch, control and balletic movement in tight spaces, the first players who spring to mind are Zinedine Zidane and Andrés Iniesta.
