The UEFA Euro 2024 proved to be a thrilling tournament, culminating in Spain emerging as the champions. La Roja secured a victory over Germany, despite a controversial handball call that went in their favour during the quarterfinals. This decision sparked widespread criticism of VAR and the referee's judgment, prompting an outcry on social media.

UEFA Referees Committee acknowledges their error

In a recent development, the UEFA Referees Committee has acknowledged an error in the quarterfinal match. This incident has been thoroughly reviewed as part of UEFA's efforts to standardize decision-making in European matches.

In a recent UEFA document, it was emphasized that stricter enforcement of hand-to-ball contact should be implemented, with penalties being awarded in 'most' cases. The document also reviewed the Marc Cucurella incident, concluding that the correct decision should have been a handball in favor of Germany.

The Tale of a Close Defeat

Spain secured a 2-1 victory over Germany in the UEFA Euro 2024 quarterfinals on July 5. UEFA's recent notification regarding Marc Cucurella’s handball incident has sparked strong reactions from fans and players alike.

Referee decisions undoubtedly have the power to influence game outcomes, and the unfortunate turn of events for Germany cannot be overlooked. UEFA's acknowledgment of its errors and commitment to rectifying them in future matches is the minimum expected.

Kroos's ironic remarks

German Sniper Toni Kroos had a sarcastic take on UEFA's acceptance. He stated that it took them 3 months to realize that Germany deserved to get a penalty for such a situation. He ironically claimed it to be an insignificant matter and questioned whether he could now proclaim himself to be a Euro Champion.

"It took them three months to realize it was a handball, something that almost everyone saw in a second. Thank you, it wasn't that big of a deal. Can I proclaim myself European champion now that they've officially said it was a mistake? I don't think so." - Kroos said.
