On his 100th City appearance, Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the 18th minute of the game at close range, making Chelsea pay for a poor start. He outmuscled two opposition players and lifted the ball over Robert Sanchez, the goalie for the Blues, and into the goal.

In ninety minutes against Chelsea, Erling Haaland, who is sometimes criticized for not contributing anything aside from his goals, completed just three passes. Following the final whistle, he acknowledged that he wanted to raise his level of play overall but questioned whether it was really necessary.

He said, “When you see today, all the defenders and how good they play to the midfielders. Pep will not like me saying this, but they don’t need me in this team, so I can just stand there and watch!

The former Borussia Dortmund superstar said, "But no, of course, to get more involved, that's what Pep wants. But do I need to be more involved? I don't know. It's the million-dollar question. I want to get more assists and become a better player."

Haaland added, "The guy asked for my shirt last season and now he's singing bad stuff about me. He can do what he wants, I couldn't care less. It was an interesting song from that guy. I don't have much more to say. It's three points and a perfect start. First game is always hard for everyone, it doesn't matter if you have a pre-season or not. I actually had a long pre-season so that's good. I don't actually feel perfect because I'm not in the perfect shape, but yeah it's good to start and to win.”

Mateo Kovacic later scored a late goal against his old team to effectively seal the victory and help City launch a strong Premier League defence.

“He sings a song about me” : Erling Haaland

A few weeks following the Spaniard performed a song making fun of the Norwegian, Erling Haaland had a last laugh as he held off the defense and scored Man City's opening goal versus Chelsea.

The Manchester City superstar said, “Well, Cucurella is a funny man. Last season he asked for my shirt… and this summer he sings a song about me.”
