Real Madrid were tamed in the El-Classico fixture against their arch-rivals Barcelona in the final of the Spanish Super Cup in Jeddah, ultimately losing with a humiliating 5-2 scoreline.
Despite the defeat, Carlo Ancelotti recognized that Kylian Mbappe showed a commendable performance, standing out as the only player from Real Madrid to make a significant impact in the match.
Mbappe initiated the scoring for Real with a quick goal, setting a promising tone for the match. However, just 17 minutes later, Lamine Yamal responded with an impressive solo effort, levelling the score and revitalizing his team's momentum. This goal seemed to energize the Catalan club, leading to a series of successful plays that shifted the momentum in their favour.
Ancelotti refrains from framing a 'Scapegoat'
Following the recent match against their rivals, manager Ancelotti took the opportunity to highlight areas for improvement within the team. He acknowledged that while Kylian Mbappe had a strong performance in El Clasico, the overall team effort fell short.
Ancelotti emphasized the importance of strong defensive play to secure victories in such high-stakes matches. He recognized that Barcelona played effectively on the defensive end and deserved the win. While the team's performance wasn't up to par, he chose to focus on the collective effort and refrained from making a player the 'scapegoat'
"You have to defend well to win these games. Barcelona deserved to win, they defended better than us. The team is not looking good, but I’m not going to point the finger at anyone. Mbappe had a good game, he was probably the only one who played well. I’m not going to name names on this, but we were not good from the first minute, and did not perform." Ancelotti said.
The reigning Spanish champions are set to return to action on Thursday, facing Celta Vigo in a decisive Copa del Rey round of 16 matches at home.
