When Hungary's Dominik Szoboszlai whipped a freekick into the box, Scotland's Angus Gunn collided with Varga in the 69th minute. Varga went down right away, causing the players and medical staff in Hungary to react frantically as they surrounded him with a wall of protection.

As medical personnel set up privacy screens and carried Varga from the pitch on a stretcher, it was clear how serious the situation was. This terrifying scene reminded me of Christian Eriksen's collapse in Denmark's Euro 2020 opening match. On the pitch, Eriksen experienced a heart arrest and needed emergency care before his life could be saved.

Hungary team management released a statement regarding the incident as they wrote, “The condition of Barnabas Varga is stable. The Hungarian national team player is currently in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart. We will inform you immediately if there is any news on his status.”

The Hungary football team manager Marco Rossi gave a valuable update about the forward. He said that, “Barnabás Varga’s life is not in danger. He will undergo an operation after a fracture in his face and he won’t be available for the rest of Euro 2024”.

The image of Hungarian attacker Barnabas Varga being stretchered off the field during their crucial UEFA Euro 2024 encounter against Scotland was, to put it mildly, unsettling, and everyone in Stuttgart Arena rose up their own. The incident brought back flashbacks of Christian Eriksen's fall while representing Denmark at the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament.

Hungary break Scotland hearts during 100th minute of the match

To survive in UEFA Euro 2024, Barnabas Varga's squad pulled off an incredible comeback win in the last seconds. But thanks to a protracted stoppage, Hungry was able to write history as Kevin Csoboth's decisive last-minute winner moved the team up to third place in Group A. In contrast, Scotland, who were content with the score of 0-0, experienced heartbreak in the last seconds of the match.
