Scotland knew they needed to win to have the greatest chance of qualifying for the Euro 2024 round of 16 when they came to the MHPArena on Sunday night. Despite having the most of the ball in a cagey first half, Steve Clarke's team was generally unable to force Hungary goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi to make saves.

In the 69th minute of the game, Dominik Szoboszlai curled in a free kick that Scotland's goalkeeper Angus Gunn rushed out to knock away. Gunn rushed out and crashed with Barnabas Varga, who remained down, with physios rushing in and players building a wall around him in the six-yard area. The medical team wrapped a towel around the player as he was receiving medical care.

Varga was then stretchered from the pitch by medical personnel. Varga was eventually taken off on a stretcher, and Martin Adam took his place. VAR checks were undertaken; however Hungary received no punishment as a result of the incident. Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai burst into tears after witnessing Barnabas Varga suffer a catastrophic injury during a terrible collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Stuttgart Arena fans rose to praise him

Hungary's players also ran to the stretcher bearers as they entered the pitch, with Varga clearly in anguish. The incident left the Hungary squad understandably outraged, with captain Szoboszlai seen in tears.

Varga was stretchered off the ground after a six-minute delay, and the Stuttgart Arena fans rose to praise him as he left. The host broadcaster permitted one replay of the event to be played, while VAR looked for a possible penalty against Gunn.

That check was cleared, though, and the game remained scoreless. Former Scotland international Pat Nevin defended Gunn for sprinting off his line, claiming the contact was entirely unintentional. Scotland eventually lost the match 1-0 against Hungary, and thus were eliminated from Euro 2024.

As per Sportstar, “The condition of Barnabas Varga is stable,” the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) wrote on X. “The Hungarian national team player is currently in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart. We will inform you immediately if there is any news on his status,” the statement added.
