Turkish football club Fenerbahce's manager, Jose Mourinho, has claimed VAR, stating that three penalties were missed during the Europa League shootout as his club crashed out of the event.
Fenerbahce headed into the contest trailing from the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 clash against Rangers. However, the team showed resilience in the second leg at Ibrox Stadium, securing a commanding 2-0 victory in regulation time.
They faltered during the penalty shootout as Dusan Tadic, Fred, and Mert Hakan Yandas missed their spot-kicks when it mattered the most.
Jose Mourinho slams VAR after Europa League exit
Fenerbahce boss Mourinho has asserted that a conspiracy has been plotted against his team, emphasizing that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) inexplicably failed to recognize one of three clear penalties. The Portuguese coach also touched on the fact that this oversight may merely be a coincidence but remained convinced of the injustices his side has faced.
"I hope everything that's happened to me in European competitions is not a consequence of the Budapest final, and I hope it's just random. Since that final, since my suspension, the things that happened to us - we didn't play Champions league because of a penalty on 120th minute penalty that only the fourth official saw," said Jose Mourinho in the post-match interview.
"Today we come here, and the VAR is considered one of the best VARs. He didn't see one of the three penalties. I just hope it's random. I paid for the suspension, and I hope that it's over. I pray that this is just bad luck," he added later.
Jose Mourinho's club will now look to battle for the Super Lig crown as they currently stand in the second position, seven points behind league leaders Galatasaray.
