Reports state that Girona of La Liga has agreed to purchase playmaker Donny van de Beek from Manchester United. And of the £40 million the Red Devils spent to sign him in 2020, they will recover only pennies on the dollar kind of sum. According to Fabrizio Romano, once Van de Beek arrives for a pitiful initial cost, the contract might increase to little over £4 million if performance targets are satisfied.

In 2020, the 27-year-old Dutchman moved from Ajax to Manchester United. Together with players like Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong, he had been a standout in an Ajax team that had advanced to the Champions League semifinal the previous season. However, his tenure at United fell short of expectations as he was resorted to limited gametime. The former Ajax midfielder has played 62 games for Manchester United, contributing two assists and two goals.

He made just seven league games for Everton after being loaned to the team in the transfer market in January of 2022. Last year, following yet another season marred by injuries at United, he went on loan to Frankfurt of the Bundesliga. After he only made eight league games for them, the German team decided not to exercise the £8.5 million buyout option that was part of the contract.

Donny Van de Beek set to play in the UEFA Champions League?

Fabrizio Romano claims that Girona and United have reached an agreement. Van de Beek must still come to a personal agreement with the side, though. Last season, Girona had a season out of a fairy tale, coming in third place in La Liga below FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

That implies that they will play Champions League football with Van de Beek the next season. Despite their ownership, they are allowed to play alongside Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League next season because they are a part of the City Group.
