Manchester United is considering signing a new midfielder to fill the void in the squad after the departure of Casemiro. The Brazilian legend is set to leave Old Trafford this summer leaving Erik Ten Hag’s squad under pressure. However, media reports suggest that the team manager has set his eyes on West Ham ace Edson Alvarez.

The Ex-Ajax midfielder has been phenomenal for West Ham since signing a £35 million ($44.4m) contract. He joined the squad last summer as a replacement for Declan Rice who left a prominent impact on the team’s performance. Notably, his prospects are improving with his skills of being a defending midfielder which has been key to Ten Hag’s work ethic.

Italian Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported this inside scoop about Manchester United’s plans. He said, "Internally they are discussing several options in case Casemiro leaves the club and in case there will be room with FFP for a new midfielder.”

“Manchester United are assessing some opportunities and more options. One of the names they discussed recently was Edson Alvarez from West Ham. Very expensive, very difficult deal, because for West Ham, he's a crucial player”, he further added.

When will Edson Alvarez join Man United?

The decision is yet to be taken and media reports suggest that Erik Ten Hag and his team are looking for a midfielder and Alvarez is one of those names. However, if the Dutchman decides to go with the West Ham superstar they will need to wait until the completion of the Copa America Cup.

Notably, Edson Alvarez is currently with his national team Mexico to participate in the upcoming tournament. Signing Alvarez will surely improve Manchester United’s skills and bench strength. The team has faced a very poor run in the 2023/24 season and this signing will be a part of their bid to improve their chances.

It is also important to note that if Alvarez joins the Red Devils, he will become the fourth ex-Ajax member to pen a contract with the Old Trafford-based squad. Since 2022, Erik Ten Hag has signed Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Andre Onana who all are ex-Ajax members.
