Former Portugal coach Fernando Santos has commended Cristiano Ronaldo for his strategic decision to move to Saudi Arabia, highlighting how it has secured his future. The coach, who led Portugal to victory in the 2016 European Championship, expressed admiration for the 39-year-old’s choice to join the Saudi Pro League in 2023. Santos confidently stated that Al-Nassr should be regarded on par with the clubs in Europe.
Santos's take on Ronaldo's statement
Santos thinks that the Five-time Ballon d'Or winner has made such extravagant statements to secure his immediate future in Saudi Arabia. His contract is expected to expire in the next six months.
"Cristiano Ronaldo's move to Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr is an incredible decision, but it is a unique experience, and Al Nassr is no different to European clubs. The atmosphere in Saudi football is wonderful. Cristiano is a world-class player and was looking to secure his future," Santos said.
Ronaldo has encountered criticism and trolling following his comments about Ligue 1 during his speech at the Globe Soccer Awards last month. He asserted that the Saudi Pro League is superior to Ligue 1, stating that his opinion was not influenced by his own experience there. He emphasized that he doesn't concern himself with others' thoughts on the matter and believes that players should consider joining the Saudi league, which he feels they will do soon.
"The Saudi Pro League is better than Ligue 1, of course. I'm not saying that because I play here. I don't care what people think about it. Players should come here and they will see quickly. Just try to do sprints at 38, 39, 40 degrees...Come and you will see. If you don't believe me, come. In France, they only have PSG, everyone else is finished. Nobody can beat them because they have the most money and the best players," he added.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star is ready to make his return to the field for Al-Nassr this week following a well-deserved winter break. The team is gearing up for an exciting league match against Al-Akhdoud on Thursday.
