Julian Alvarez is set to make his departure from Manchester City as the star forward has signed an £81.5m deal with Atletico Madrid. This has been a record sale for the Premier League champions but will surely hurt them in the upcoming season. Alvarez has significantly contributed to City’s success in the last two years after his arrival from River Plate.

The Argentine has been able to fill the big shoes of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne, both of whom missed games through injury in 2023/24. He has played in multiple positions and has scored 54 goals and assists in 103 appearances.

However, it is learned that City will take a fresh approach in the transfer window by not necessarily going into the market to replace their key player. Rather than rushing out and spending huge sums on direct replacements, The Sky Blues are to prioritize their internal options. They will be assessing the existing players and reward them with more game time.

James McAtee likely to be Pep Guardiola's first-choice

Meanwhile, academy graduate James McAtee has already been touted for a role by Pep Guardiola. The City boss heaped massive praise on the 21-year-old, saying he has high hopes for him considering his ability to play in small spaces.

"I would love to keep him next season with us, because he's a special guy to play in small spaces, in the pockets, and we don't have many. He's a player I have a high, high opinion of, and I would like if he can insert properly with the team,” Guardiola said.

Apart from McAtee, the new addition Savinho is also a good option for the Citizens if they are looking for a replacement within their squad. Meanwhile, Oscar Bobb is a talented player who can cover the shortfall from Alvarez’s exit. Chelsea had shown interest in him, but City has turned down the offer.
