Robin van Persie has officially taken the role of head coach at Feyenoord, following his departure from Heerenveen. The 41-year-old Premier League legend had been with Heerenveen since the beginning of the season but has made a timely move to join Feyenoord at De Kuip.
Feyenoord, initially apprehensive about a potential wait until summer for his appointment, has now reached a consensus on his immediate transition. The club announced his tenure to begin on February 24th.
Feyenoord's new boss to face stiff challenge in Champions league
Feyenoord will confront either Arsenal or Inter Milan in the last 16 of the Champions League, setting the stage for Van Persie to reunite with his former club at the Emirates.
Rene Hake, the former Manchester United assistant coach who departed alongside Erik ten Hag in November, has been appointed as one of Van Persie's assistants.
Feyenoord parted ways with Brian Priske earlier this month and currently occupies third place in the Eredivisie, trailing Ajax by 13 points. Pascal Bosschaart is serving as interim coach until Robin van Persie's appointment.
Feyenoord is Van Persie's hometown club, where he began his career and returned for the final chapter of his playing days.
"Everyone knows how special my bond with Feyenoord is, I am really looking forward to working with the group of players on 1908, together with a strong staff, and then playing matches in De Kuip, supported by the legion, and achieving success together." Van Persie said.
He played a crucial role in the Feyenoord team that clinched the 2001-02 UEFA Cup, notably starting in their decisive 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the final.
Given his background, it was only natural for him to kickstart his coaching career at Feyenoord. He began by joining Dick Advocaat's staff in an unofficial capacity to train strikers in 2020. His talent and determination quickly propelled him up the ranks to become the manager of the under-19s team. This summer, he stepped into the spotlight as the head coach of Heerenveen, marking his first top-level managerial position.
