FC Barcelona announced on Wednesday that former Bayern Munich and Germany coach Hansi Flick will be taking over as the men's team coach. The appointment arrives after Xavi, who had previously been in charge since the 2021/22 campaign, departed at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.
The 59-year-old will succeed Xavi, who led the club from eighth to second place in LaLiga after Ronald Koeman was sacked. Barcelona were declared champions in 2022/23, but they were unable to mount a meaningful campaign in the recently finished season, losing the title to foes Real Madrid.
Hansi Flick said that, “First of all I would like to say thank you to everyone (involved). It’s a big honour and also a dream for me to sign my contract here in Barcelona, to work for this amazing club, and I’m happy to start.”
The former Bayern Munich manager added, “The club is unbelievable. The hours I’m here in Barcelona, it’s amazing because everyone here in the club loves this club and tries to give their best so they have success. The philosophy they have is similar to mine – ball possession and really attacking football, these are the things I love. I won some titles with Bayern Munich and my hunger is really big for titles. I would like to stay on this path with Barcelona and I think we can achieve a lot together.”
“Barcelona has one of the best academies in the world” : Hansi Flick
Hansi Flick spoke about FC Barcelona having one of the best academies and commented on that, “These are things I love and yeah, we'll work on that. Barcelona has one of the best academies in the world and they have a good mix between experienced as well as young players and I think we have to improve them, and this is our job together with Deco and the president Laporta. It's very important for me, the teamwork."
The former Germany head coach concluded by saying that, "Yeah, we need to be together about that and to care about what we focus on, yeah, I am really happy to do this with these guys. I won some titles”
