In a surprising turn of events, former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan is about to take on a new challenge i.e. professional tennis. The 45-year-old, who retired from football in 2019, is set to make his ATP debut in doubles at the Uruguay Open next month. Forlan will partner with Argentine tennis star Federico Coria in the tournament held in his hometown of Montevideo.
Though widely known for his football prowess, Forlan has a strong background in tennis, having been a promising junior player in his teens. He recently played in ITF Masters events, competing in the 45-and-over category. However, this upcoming tournament represents a major step up, as it is part of the ATP Challenger Tour — the second tier of professional tennis competitions. Forlan received a wildcard to participate, allowing him to enter this higher-level tournament.
Who is Federico Coria?
Federico Coria, Forlan’s partner in the doubles event, is no stranger to the ATP circuit. Ranked world number 101 in singles, Coria reached a career-high ranking of 49 earlier in 2023. His experience on the court is expected to complement Forlan’s athleticism and competitive spirit, even though this will be the former footballer’s first taste of a professional tennis event at this level.
Forlan, a footballing icon, is remembered for his illustrious career in Europe and for Uruguay. After joining Manchester United in 2002, Forlan played in 98 matches for the club before moving to Villarreal in Spain, where he twice won the prestigious European Golden Shoe as the continent’s top scorer.
His crowning footballing achievement came in 2010, when he won the Golden Ball as the best player of the FIFA World Cup, leading Uruguay to a third-place finish. He followed that up by helping his national team to win the 2011 Copa America.
Forlan’s transition from football legend to tennis competitor adds another layer to his already impressive sporting resume. Fans of both sports will be eager to see how his skills transfer to the tennis court in Montevideo.
