Manchester United secured a convincing 3-0 win against Southampton at St Mary's Stadium in the Premier League, marking their return to winning ways.

Despite initial pressure and a penalty save by goalkeeper Andre Onana, the team quickly turned the tide. Matthijs de Ligt and Marcus Rashford silenced critics by scoring within six minutes, propelling the Red Devils into the lead. Despite facing scrutiny, de Ligt proved his worth, delivering on the faith placed in him by Erik ten Hag.

Bayern's director revealed the reason for De Ligt's departure

In Germany, Bundesliga Giants Bayern Munich has been asked a lot about why they sold a classic defender like De Ligt, even though their fans tried to convince them not to.

The club's sporting director, Max Eberl, explained that they decided for both strategic and financial reasons. He said that they felt De Ligt wasn't fast enough for their style of play under their coach Vincent Kompany, who likes the team to play with a high defensive line. They believe other players like Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano are better suited for this style.

"I followed it, including the petition. I know that many fans identify with him,” Eberl told in a press conference.

“Nevertheless, I had to make this decision because we also had to sell players. We felt more comfortable with Upamecano and Kim because they can defend higher up the pitch. And then an offer came in for de Ligt,” Eberl added.

Ten Hag knows De Ligt more than anyone else

During his time at Ajax, Ten Hag appointed De Ligt as captain and possesses in-depth knowledge of the player's strengths, weaknesses, and optimal management approach. With Raphael Varane's departure, Manchester United required a right-sided center-back. Despite missing out on Jarrad Branthwaite, they ultimately secured the signing of the Dutch center-back. Now, following the 25-year-old's goal and clean sheet, Ten Hag will be hopeful that he can regain the form he exhibited in Amsterdam, where he was considered one of the most sought-after talents in European football.
