Matthijs De Ligt's transfer from Bayern Munich to Manchester United was one of the most talked about transfers in this summer's transfer window. De Ligt's transfer aroused mixed emotions among Bayern Fans, as they seemed divided by the club's decision. Amidst all the noise, Bayern Munich Director Max Eberal justified the club's decision to let go of De Ligt as the Club required a "left-footed defender" and hence decided to replace the Dutchman for the Japanese Hiroki Ito.

Eberal further mentioned that neither he nor the club ever intended to badmouth De Ligt, who was an asset to their team. Eberal also informed that all the decisions were made after thorough consultation with the player and coach.

Eberal understands that players like Matthijs De Ligt are fan favourites but thinks that club decisions cannot be based on such emotions since as a club, they need to generate revenue.

Max Eberal on why He sold De Ligt

Max added - “Of course we know how Matthijs performed, and we wouldn’t talk bad about him. But we made decisions regarding the defence, we wanted a left-footed defender, that’s why we signed Hiroki. "

“We spent money on Olise, Palhinha and Hiroki. So as a club, you have to generate money”-  Eberal said while explaining why they sold Matthijs de Ligt.

“I understand that there are fan favourites, but we don’t make decisions based on fan favourites,” Eberl said. “We spoke to Vincent and made decisions regarding the squad.

De Ligt being Kompany's first choice Centre Back

When Red Devils' new head coach Vincent Kompany was asked about, De Ligt being his first choice centre back at Bayern, he hilariously denied such accusations, adding that it would be stupid of him to make such statements about a player who is on the verge of leaving the team soon.

Kompany - “I’ve definitely not said that, It would’ve been so stupid of me to say something like that – it wouldn’t fit with what we’ve planned for the entire squad, the competition and having two players for each position, and then say something like that to a player that you know is probably leaving? It makes no sense.”
