Liverpool is considering a move for their most prominent striker, Uruguayan central forward Darwin Nunez, following a disastrous past week. Liverpool got knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in the round of 16 clash against Paris Saint-Germain. Days later the Reds lost the Carabao Cup finals against Newcastle United.
With the current season, inching closer to its final weeks, Liverpool manager Arne Slot has decided to rebuild the Reds heading into the next season. Slot hasn't been a huge supporter of Nunez, having given him only 8 starts for the team across club competitions this season. However, it's fair to say that Nunez didn't perform to his standards in the opportunities that arrived at his helm.
After a disastrous round of 16 exit from the UEFA Champions League against PSG, which saw Nunez miss a crucial spot kick in the penalty shootout, the Reds have set sights on more 'in-form' strikers. The likes of Alexander Isak (Newcastle United) and Joao Pedro (Brighton) lead the charts of strikers who are in the sights of Liverpool management. If the Reds manage to sign either of the two strikers, Nunez would be ready for sale at a discounted price, which could open doors for La Liga side Atletico Madrid, who wanted to acquire his services even earlier.
Atletico and Al-Nassr set sights on
As per the reports from GiveMeSport, Atletico and Cristiano Ronaldo's side Al-Nassr are in contention of signing Nunez. Atletico's recent interest in Nunez also sparks the rumours of Antoine Griezmann joining MLS Club Los Angeles FC at the end of the current season. However, the current deal is most likely to be a loan transfer with the option of obligation for Atletico to purchase him on a free transfer. It is expected that the obligation to permanently sign the Uruguayan would be set at around £30 million.
Darwin Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2022. Liverpool signed the then-top striker for a whopping £75 million. Darwin Nunez has made 88 appearances for the Reds across club competitions. He recorded 19 goal contributions during his initial year with manager Jurgen Klopp. However, since his departure, Nunez has been in horrendous form. Nunez has netted 25 goals for the Reds so far.
