Darwin Nunez recently acknowledged that he has been going through a tough period, but he showed remarkable resilience by scoring twice for Liverpool in their match against Brentford.

Despite a strong defensive effort from Thomas Frank’s team, the Bees ultimately faced intense pressure from the Reds, who recorded an astounding 37 shots throughout the game. Nunez played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s success, netting two crucial stoppage-time goals to secure a well-earned 2-0 victory for the table-toppers.

Nunez lets his feelings known

Núñez has been through some serious scrutiny in recent weeks due to his lacklustre performance in front of the goal. Before his recent double against Brentford, the Uruguayan had managed to score only four times in 26 appearances across all competitions, leading to speculation that the Reds might be considering offloading the striker in January.

After the game, Nunez addressed his recent struggles and the mental challenges he has encountered. In an interview with Sky Sports, he emphasised the importance of staying mentally strong and refusing to give up. He is determined to keep pushing forward and never considers throwing in the towel. Nunez believes that the work he puts in on the pitch is crucial for the team's defensive efforts as well. While he acknowledges he hasn't scored as many goals as expected, he’s aware that people focus on this aspect, and he remains committed to changing that narrative.

"I think you have to stay mentally strong; never give up. Yes, there are moments that are very difficult for us players; for me, it's right now. But I never throw the towel in. I always carry on working. In training, if I need to stay and practice more, I stay to improve. I think the work that I do on the pitch helps the team to defend as well. I think I’ve always done it well but I haven't scored goals and I know people look at that. The striker has to score goals." Nunez said.

"The truth is that I’m going through a rough patch and, like I said before, I stay focused on my job and giving everything for Liverpool. I think it's important to keep my head up and I always say I've got to work because I need to improve. I stay strong with this mentality and with the support of my family and the fans that are incredible," he added.

Liverpool faces a critical UEFA Champions League showdown against Lille on Tuesday. After that, they will be back in Premier League action, taking on Ipswich on January 25.
