Argentina World Cup winner Angel Di Maria has decided to part ways with his Portuguese club Benfica. The decision comes just ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
The star winger who has already hung up his boots from international football may call it quits on his club career, as per reports. A decision on whether he would continue playing is still awaited.

Angel Di Maria leaves Benfica
Angel Di María is not going to renew his contract with Benfica, signalling the conclusion of his time at the Portuguese club. The Argentine forward, who made his return to Benfica earlier this year, shared this news following a 1-1 draw against Braga, confirming that it was his final league appearance in the Eagles' jersey.
"It wasn’t the result we wanted in the championship. We worked very hard to achieve our goal. It hurts a lot to end this way after such a long season. This was my last league match with this shirt, and I’m proud to have been able to wear it again," Di Maria said.
Di Maria needed to lead his side to victory to keep their title aspirations alive, but the team could only salvage a draw against a 10-man opposition. As a result, Sporting Lisbon secured their 21st League title by defeating Vitoria Guimaraes 2-0.
"There is one final left on Sunday, and we will go with all the energy and joy to win it. Together as always. Thank you for the support, Benfica fans," he added.
Angel Di Maria still has an opportunity to make his farewell memorable. He may leave the club on a high should he help his side claim victory in the Portuguese Cup final against Sporting on May 25th.
Angel Di Maria returned for his second stint at Benfica in 2023 after switching from Juventus. In total, he made 127 appearances for the Eagles across club competitions and netted 24 goals.
