Micky van de Ven's hamstring injury during Tottenham's Carabao Cup victory against Manchester City has been verified by Ange Postecoglou. However, the Spurs manager adds he hopes Timo Werner and Cristian Romero, who were both substituted that evening, are simply tired.
In the opening moments of Spurs' 2-1 victory in the fourth-round match, Van de Ven rushed back to challenge Savinho and then grasped the back of his right thigh. The Dutchman, who began the match at left-back, seemed distressed when Destiny Udogie took his position. Postecoglou later said that he had "felt his hamstring" and will be evaluated.
Ange Postecoglou said, “Micky felt something in his hamstring. I haven't got the full update on him but he definitely felt something and we'll see how he is.”
Spurs will now have to wait anxiously to find out the full impact of Van de Ven's most recent problem after he lost two months of the previous season due to a hamstring ailment at a similar point in the campaign. Werner pulled up when taking a corner and walked off, while Cristian Romero was substituted shortly into the second half.
The Australian manager added, “Cuti was a bit tired. I contemplated changing him at half-time but after losing Micky as well I didn't want to lose another centre-half. He said he felt ok but my gut was telling me there's no point taking a risk as we had Benny who could come on. Timo hasn't played a lot so I felt it was more fatigue hopefully than anything else.”
“It was an important win” : Ange Postecoglu
Spurs secured a crucial victory and advanced to the home quarterfinals against Manchester United thanks to goals from Werner as well as Pape Matar Sarr in the first half.
The Tottenham Hotspur manager added, “It was an important win. Obviously in the cup competitions you have to win to continue in it so that is the first thing. Look, you're playing against an unbelievable side and they're going to ask you all sorts of questions and they did today.”
