ZX Spectrum is outselling Xbox Series X/S and PS5 Pro

The reimagination of an OG gaming console, ZX Spectrum, has reportedly outsold some of the most powerful modern gaming consoles across Spain.

A 40-year-old gaming console ‘ZX Spectrum’ has reportedly outsold the Xbox Series X/S and the PS5 Pro for the month of November across Spain. While not exactly the same one from the 80s, the ZX Spectrum recently saw a redesign and features loads of classic games. However, outselling two popular consoles is quite surprising.

The Xbox Series X/S was already one of the weakest in terms of sales for modern gaming consoles. Various reports revealed that the PS5 outsold the Xbox with a ratio of 1:3. As for the PS5 Pro, the MSRP makes it hard for everyone to justify a purchase which might be, especially for those who recently got a PS5.

As revealed in the statistics, the sale count for Xbox was lagging behind by a decent margin. While the numbers, don’t exactly claim that the ZX Spectrum beat the console all over, but are simply a monthly statistic. Overall, the Xbox and PS5 Pro sales are much higher.

Reimagined retro console brings back nostalgia

These numbers go on to show the power of nostalgia among gamers and how well in general older games were made. That and the improvements in the original ZX Spectrum with modern controller support, HDMI connection, classic games & modes, and loads of customization. Along with that, there are also many qualify of life features.

It is also one of the reasons why faithful remakes of older games are getting much more praise compared to several new video game releases. Most recently during the 2024 Game Awards, a lot of announcements and many of them included the revival of older video game IPs. These weren’t exactly the 8-bit video games we all know but are still long-forgotten names like Okami, Onimusha and Virtua Fighter.
