In a recent letter to shareholders, Warner Bros. has laid out the strategy moving forward with video games which now plans to focus more on IPs that have been successful in the past few years. 2024 was a big disappointment for the company with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Multiversus failing to hit the mark.
The report, which was spotted by PC Gamer revealed that the company saw a 53% decrease in games revenue compared to the previous year. “The decrease in games revenue was primarily attributable to the strong performance of the 2023 slate, including Hogwarts Legacy, compared to the 2024 slate,” the company wrote.
Warner Bros working on already established IPs
As reported earlier, Warner Bros made some changes to its video game department with multiple closures including Monolith Productions, and several layoffs which they labeled as ‘strategic restructuring’. Moving forward, the company is planning to focus entirely on IPs that are already popular.
“We are focusing our Games business around four tentpole franchises that have each generated over $1 billion in consumer sales in past years: Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat, and DC - particularly top-tier characters like Batman,” the company added.
Hogwarts Legacy was a massive success and is already getting a sequel that will be in line with the upcoming Harry Potter TV series. While fans have no idea how it will work, they usually won’t care as long as the game is good. Mortal Kombat also remains a popular fighting game and the revelation also sparked hopes for a new Batman game. Pherpahs Rocksteady will finally get a chance to redeem themselves.

An aim to bring back Games division to profitability in 2025
Apart from reassurances, there wasn’t much told about the plan moving forward. However, the games mentioned do seem to have a promising future. The company also pressed on the idea of bringing the profits back in line which is certainly possible if they worked on the aforementioned games properly.
Apart from Mortal Kombat, other names are most suited for single-player experiences, but it remains to be seen what Warner Bros. plans to do. The live service part did not pan out very well for the company last year so fans have hopes for better story-driven games rather than live-service slop.
