Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage to be a central character
Following up on the first movie, Earth needs fighters for the tournament and cannot afford to lose. This is where Johnny Cage comes in and as per the co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise, ‘ED Boon’, Cage plays an important role in the movie.
“You finally get to see Johnny Cage. His integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores. He's a washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing. Karl, his depiction of Johnny Cage is different than our games in some ways. He's adding his own flare to it, but I think it'll feel fresh,” Boon said while speaking to Entertainment Weekly.
There are also other characters, both new and returning including Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, and more.

He plays a different role. He's not part of the 'Super Friends' trying to defeat Shao Kahn, but his appearance is key and it is very essential for certain parts,” Boon further said talking about Scorpion.
