Ubisoft is reportedly shifting from its regular open-world games in the Far Cry series to a much different approach. This is done to break away from the regular releases that have been criticized by fans for some time now. Two new Far Cry games are currently in development, both taking the new route.
As revealed by Insider Gaming, the two games in the upcoming Far Cry franchise include Blackbird and Maverick, which are the assigned codenames for both games. Maverick is set to take place in the Alaskan wilderness with multiplayer elements and turning the game into an extraction shooter.
On the other hand, Blackbird will be a single-player experience that will have players rescue their family (in-game) kidnapped by a cult that is performing hallucinogenic experiments on animals and children. Interestingly, Blackbird will provide players with only 72 real-world hours to save their family rather than choose your pace game.
This is a drastic change from regular Far Cry games for both Project Maverick and Blackbird in terms of gameplay. However, this isn’t the only thing that Ubisoft is moving away from. Both games will reportedly see new movement and inventory systems.

Far Cry has been one of the most popular franchises, but recent releases have been hit by backlash from fans. While no doubt, that Ubisoft can make some great-looking games, the gameplay loop for them has been highly repetitive for players.
Blackbird does provide fresh gameplay, giving players a time limit to finish the game and will hopefully have more than one way to do things. However, Maverick is once again an online experience which can be highly risky in the current saturated market.
Most recently, Ubisoft announced that XDefiant will shut down next year and while things may work this time around, given their move to release games on Steam, it is still risky in even people at Ubisoft are a bit concerned.
