Best video game DLCs of 2024

DLCs are a great way to expand a story and improve upon a game, and 2024 was a great year with several super hit expansions. From one of the most-awaited DLCs to surprise hit surprises, there were a lot to choose from and play; however, not everyone can take the top spot. Some DLCs are considered one of the best for the amount of effort put into them.

The story expansions/continuations and additions are a huge factor that helps some of the best DLCs to stand out. Below are the best five DLCs released this year that players can experience. Do note that DLCs require the players to have access to the base game.

5. Final Fantasy XVI: The Rising Tide

The Rising Tide came out with Final Fantasy XVI’s PC release that takes players to the land of Mysidia, where the player and team take on a new story leading to an epic showdown with Leviathan. Story for Rising Tide takes place ahead of the final conclusion of the base game, so it is generally preferable to get it along with the game.

However, there was some displeasure among the fans regarding the boss fight. While the story for the expansion was well received, the difficulty for the Leviathan boss fight was something players complained about. Although people who prefer a challenge were quite happy.

4. Alan Wake 2: The Lake House and Night Springs

Alan Wake 2 was another game that received two DLCs, The Lake House and Night Springs, both of which were quite impressive and paved a connection between Alan Wake and Control. Night Springs takes place in a parallel universe and explores three stories of three different characters, Rose Marigold, Tim Breaker, and Jesse Faden.

The Night Springs have clear ties with the universe of Control and set up players for the next DLC, The Lake House. In the follow-up, players take on the role of Kiran Estevez, an agent for the Federal Bureau of Control. The Lake House DLC explores the story prior to the events of the game, tying both universes together to expand into future games.

3. Destiny 2: The Final Shape

The finale of the light and dark saga for Destiny 2 finally comes to an end after a decade. As expected, the single-player campaign was the main focus point, which pretty much hit the mark for the entire fan base with an incredible boss fight against The Witness across the raid and ‘Excision’ mission.

Speaking of raid, ‘Salvation’s Edge’ also received a lot of praise from the community after what happened with ‘Root of Nightmares’. The only word to describe the Day 1 raid race was brutal; it went on to match 'Last Wish' raid in terms of complexity, with only a handful of teams completing. The seasonal content, however, was not so well received among the audience.

2. World of Warcraft: The War Within

One of the most anticipated expansions of 2024, The War Within, apparently had people calling in sick from work as the expansion released on Monday. In the end, it was all worth it, as the DLC sent players on another journey to save Azeroth from Xal'atath the Harbinger.

Despite being short, the expansion gave players plenty of content, including incredible new zones to explore, new dungeons, and more. The War Within is the 10th expansion and is termed as one of the best entries in recent years.

1. Elden Ring: Shadow of The Erdtree

When it came to DLCs, Elden Ring did not disappoint with Shadow of the Erdtree. One and only expansions for the game, the story builds up on a hidden realm away from the lands between and is focused around Miquella with a completely new story.

What’s impressive was the amount of content and how it was different from the original game. FromSoftware even came up with new mechanics in order to provide players with a new challenge, which was apparent. Shadow of the Erdtree is one of the highest-rated DLCs and is also a contender at the game awards, although it did create a controversy for that.
