Best RPG games 2024

RPG games, over the years, have evolved a lot and the best example of it is 2024 which in general was another big year. This year, RPG fans once again got to play some of the best games with incredible stories, many of which are the contenders at the upcoming Game Awards 2024.

Among all the games, few have made a mark among fans as while the genre has evolved over the years, these games while adapting to time, keep the core gameplay similar to what people know and love from a decade ago.

Here are the best RPG games released in 2024

5. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

Mixing goofy characters and gameplay, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is undoubtedly one of the best RPG games for 2024. The game brings back some iconic characters from the series and dumps them in Hawaii with a new neighbourhood to explore and loads of activities to do.

Boasting an engaging but fun combat, which at times can become surreal, it’s the perfect game to play when players want to forget everything and have fun. The release did see some controversy with New Game+ locked behind a different version, apart from that, the core game is still fun to play.

4. Black Myth: Wukong

One of the biggest releases of 2024, Black Myth: Wukong became the second most-played video game on Steam. Telling the story of Wukong from the Chinese novel, Journey to the West, the game features some incredible boss fights and jaw-dropping visuals similar to Elden Ring but remains a bit more forgiving and player-friendly.

There are different fighting styles to upgrade and choose from and similar to the folklore, players also have access to Wukong’s of iconic moves like shape-shifting, shadow clone and more. There are some elements that can be frustrating, but the combat and exploration easily overshadow all of them.

3. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

Many believed that splitting one of the best video games into separate parts might not be a good idea, but Final Fantasy proved everyone wrong. Currently standing as one of the best remakes, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the second entry in the trilogy, and the series keeps getting better with every release.

Visuals aside, the remake adds a lot more depth to characters compared to the original game, while also being faithful to some of the most iconic moments. Sadly, only the PlayStation users will be able to enjoy the story first-hand for now.

2. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

The follow-up for 2022 game of the year, Shadow of the Erdtree in itself can be compared to a full game in terms of size game content but is an expansion for Elden Ring. Featuring a completely new area with a new storyline, and bosses, the game will give everyone a run for their money.

With Shadow of the Erdtree, Formsoftware switched up a few mechanics in order to counter power creep and give players the feeling of starting from zero. Many complained as they jumped on to play the expansion only to get stuck on the tutorial boss once again, despite that, it remains one of the strongest releases of 2024.

1. Metaphor: ReFantazio

From the developers behind the Persona series, Metaphor: ReFantazio was a surprising entry of 2024. No one saw the game coming and while it is similar to Persona games, it is not the same. Players are on a quest to claim the throne after the king’s assassination.

The gameplay elements are taken from classic Atlus games, mixed with a completely new story, and memorable characters each with a unique personality. In terms of gameplay, it is the old formula Persona fans know and love but with much more depth.
