As for the affected employees, some people were working on the cancelled games, however, the layoffs are ‘more widespread’ across the affected studios.

In a Kotaku report, a former PlayStation Visual Arts project manager reposted an update from one of the current employees, ‘Javier Perez’, who revealed that multiple talented developments were laid off from the studio. “Thank you to everyone who has reached out to me. This week has been incredibly tough for everyone at PSVA. While I’m safe for now, many of my amazingly talented coworkers are not,” he wrote.

Concord’s failure pinned as main reason for layoffs

Concord was a very ambitious game that aimed too high in a saturated market. While PlayStation did not provide the official numbers, it was dubbed as the biggest loss in the video game industry. It was so big that the massive success of Helldivers 2 was also not enough to cover.

Following this, Sony has been silently cancelling multiple live service games and laying off excess employees from those studios. Another affected development studio includes PS Studios Malaysia which also saw multiple layoffs as per its Senior Project Manager (former) Johann Affendy Mahfoor.

“There was a wave of workforce reduction and unfortunately I'm no longer part of the PS brand, along with a few other Production mates in this then-cheerful lunch photo. Saddest, most devastating part for me was seeing high performers and key individuals who were actively working on projects being laid off. I wish everyone affected all the very best, and I hope we all come back stronger from this challenging ordeal,” Mahfoor wrote.
