A lawsuit against Sony has been filled by the Dutch corporation Stitching Massaschade&Consument. The company has accused the Japanese multinational conglomerate of unnecessarily raising the prices of the Sony PlayStation games, abusing their market standing and are charging higher rates than their original prices. The prices of digital games are comparatively higher than those of the physical games.
Sony has also faced several legal actions in the past, related toSony PlayStationprices issues. In the year 2022, PlayStation was hit with a lawsuit of 5 billion euros, due to a breach of the Competition Law with the publishers and the developers. Following this, in 2023, Sony faced another lawsuit of 7.9 billion dollars due to a breach in the PlayStation Store, where the company was alleged of overcharging their consumers with their dominant foothold in the gaming market. It’s been two years, but Sony continues to struggle with legal actions in 2025 once again.
47% difference between Digital and Physical games
In the lawsuit, Massachade argues that the prices of the digital games are excessively higher than the physical version, which is equivalent to nearly 47%, and this is irrespective of the distribution prices which are low.
This claim is based on a research conducted by the Massaschade and Consument group, which found that the customers are discouraged for buying digital games since there is a vast difference compared to the physical games. The customers as they have limited choices as well.
It has come to the forefront that the people of Netherlands have the provision of joining the lawsuit for free, provided they have bought the PlayStation games. This legal action can open the road for other sellers in the digital market. The hearing of the court is likely to take place in the end of this year.
