One of the oldest and biggest gaming companies from Japan, Sega, is reportedly thinking of launching a subscription service. Similar to other subscription services by companies like the Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, Ubisoft+, or EA Play, Sega will likely provide players access to all of their classic games in the library for a monthly fee.

This comes from a BBC interview where Sega president Shuji Utsumi talked about its possibilities. When asked, Utsumi told me that the idea is very interesting and that they’re “thinking something and discussing something,” which they cannot disclose at the moment.

A subscription for Sega games does sound quite interesting, especially with titles like Persona, Yakuza, Megami Tensei, Virtua Fighter, Sonic, and various others. The company has also been in the spotlight recently thanks to their success in both gaming with Metaphor Refantazio and in movies with recently released Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Too many video game subscriptions?

Similar to Netflix and Amazon Prime, gamers also have several choices of subscription services for video games. These can cost anywhere between $5 and up depending on the region and tiers of that subscription; however, when combined, they can easily cost a decent chunk of money. Enough to actually buy full games, as subscriptions are usually just gamers renting the game for a duration.

This raises a debate about whether the service is actually worth it. The subscription can be good for those looking to play as many games as they can, but isn’t actually beneficial for people who do not have much time and play select games.

The decision for a subscription service for Sega games will likely become a possibility as the company already has a good audience. Furthermore, having a subscription model will not cost them anything, as the company already boasts a huge library of both new and classic games.
