Sony’s PS3 receives a surprising update to improve ‘system performance’

Almost two decades after launch and eight years after halting production, Sony is still updating the PlayStation 3 console. Users have now received a surprise update for the console that further improves the usability, and security of the console while also renewing the Blu-ray disc player encryption key.

The PS3 is most certainly not getting any new games as even PS4 is losing support with each passing month. However, the console does have a Blu-ray player which can be used to watch movies and videos. These drives use Advanced Access Content System (AACS) which needs to be updated regularly, hence the update.

“To download the update, you need a minimum of 200MB of free space on either the PS3 Hard Disk Drive (System Update) or on removable storage media (PC Update).  Always update your PS3 system to the latest version of the system software. By updating, you can enjoy additional features, improved usability, and enhanced security,” the official statement wrote.

PS3 update surprises fans

A lot of people have already moved on to newer consoles like PS4 which still remains one of the best-selling gaming hardware and PS5 for the latest games. The newer version of consoles updates the Blu-ray encryption key on the go automatically which is why many don’t know much about this.

PS3 on the other hand needs a software update. The last update was a year ago which also wrote ‘system performance’ as the summary for updating the encryption key. This will likely be the case moving forward for the system until Sony completely ceases all support for the device. Still, updating the device almost 20 years after release is quite impressive work.

What happens if players don’t update their PS3?

Sony also mentioned that people who do not update their console will not be able to use the Blu-ray disc. This will prevent people from watching a movie or playing a game if they suddenly feel nostalgic. Thankful, the update is very small and will complete within minutes.
