A new announcement from Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller follows up on Blizzard’s move to bring 6v6 game mode back in the game. The modes will be brought as an experimentation and players will be able to take part in two different 6v6 tests in Season 14.

The aforementioned tests will be added as part of the Open Queue in Overwatch 2. As per the official blog post further elaborated on the requirements of the 6v6 mode. The game is diverting into a more open 6v6 format compared to the previous 2-2-2 roles.

This time around, players will need 1 of each role from the Tank, Damage or Support list inside the game. The maximum for each other these roles a game can have will be 3. The first test will start within one week of the next season.

“Part of this series of tests is to not only judge our player’s appetite for larger team sizes but for us to explore different ways that we might implement a change without running into the same problems we had previously,” the post wrote.

The second test will be the standard 2-2-2 role queue, but with added hero reworks from Overwatch 2. This will be introduced during the Overwatch Season 14 mid-cycle.

More freedom in Overwatch 2 roles?

As an added bonus to the increased freedom of team composition, players will also be able to change roles during the match or characters during a match. The only restriction here is that players can do this as long as it does not break the 1 minimum and 3 maximum role requirements.

The 6v6 tests will have their own section in the Unranked and other modes, and will not be taking the place of other types of game modes like seasonal events or Quick Play. Results from these two tests will help to determine the move forward. The blog also mentions the possibility of keeping the 5v5 and 6v6 modes together inside the game.
