Nintendo recently made headlines with the reveal of Switch 2. Many would think of a new device will likely get less focus, however, President Shuntaro Furukawa, during a recent earnings call said that support for Switch will be present as long as there is a demand.
In the Q3 FY2025, Nintendo lowered its earnings forecast from 1.28 trillion yen to 1.19 trillion yen. Along with this, the net profit was also adjusted from 300 billion yen to 270 billion yen. This came on the back of low hardware sales (Nintendo Switch).
Last year, rumors regarding a new Nintendo console ramped up and with the company admitting Switch is coming, it’s not hard to think of it as the reason. However, Furukawa reportedly refuted low sales due to people waiting for the new console. “We don't think the impact of refraining from purchasing is that great. We think it's a solid eighth year, but we haven't reached our target,” he said as reported by Sankei.
Nintendo Switch remains one of the most popular console
The report also noted that Switch sold over 4.8 million units during the holiday season and over 9.5 million units since April 1, 2024. Lifetime sales for the handheld have crossed 150 million which ranks third, only bested by Nintendo DS at 154 million sales and PS2 at 160 million sales. This also came after a 30% year-on-year decline.
