The studio behind popular racing games like Need for Speed and Burnout, ‘Criterion Games’, is invested heavily in the upcoming Battlefield game as part of Battlefield Studios. This is one of the reasons why fans haven’t heard any news from the iconic racing series in a while. However, the series isn’t dead just yet as there are plans for more games.
In a statement to Eurogamer, EA’s Vince Zampella said, “The Need for Speed team at Criterion are joining their colleagues working on Battlefield. As a company, it was important to us to take the last year to listen to our Need for Speed community and use their feedback to create content for Unbound,” talking about 2022’s NFS Unbound.
The game, however, wasn’t as a big success as other installments. Major complaints from fans mentioned unsatisfactory driving and gameplay loop. This was a rare miss for the franchise and with EA’s decision to move Criterion to work on Battlefield game, the studio did not get a chance to continue the franchise.
Need For Speed franchise to return with new ideas
Despite the team being busy with the signature title for Electronic Arts, NFS fans need not fret as Zampella further revealed that the franchise is simply on hold. There will be more Need For Speed games that will explore new ideas.
“With an increased understanding of what our players want in a Need for Speed experience, we plan to bring the franchise back in a new and interesting way,” Zampella further added. For now, the NFS franchise does not have any games in active development.
