New leaks regarding the monetization for Marvel Rivals has revealed mention of loot boxes that were previously planned to be added inside the game. However, they were reportedly scraped and players now have the current item shop where they can purchase cosmetics for a fixed in-game price without leaving anything to luck.
As noted by RivalsLeaks on X (Twitter), investigations regarding loot boxes revealed that players could convert Lattice and Units into Crystallization and Marscoin which would be used to open those boxes for a chance to receive cosmetics of different rarity.
Loot Boxes are basically gambling and are usually not very welcome in the gaming community because of controversy surrounding them. A data mined image displayed the different currencies and mention of lottery. Another set showcased what the loot boxes looked like and their opening animation frames.

Are loot box coming to Marvel Rivals?
Marvel Rivals achieved a lot of fan in very short amount of time over its competitor, mainly Overwatch 2. That’s because the game improved on many aspects compared to other game. However, it is hard to tell if the loot boxes were an idea that was scraped or will be added in future for monetization.
The game is heavily inspired by Overwatch, and it’s possible that NetEase also took inspiration of loot boxes. After all, they are known for their mobile games that usually have this kind of loot boxes, but in case of Marvel Rivals, the company risks long a lot of players if they lean very heavily into this direction.
As per the developers, the game has reached over 20 million players and most are quite happy with how things are in terms of monetization. Even if NetEase plans on adding the loot boxes, it will likely be some time in the future or, as RivalsLeaks mentioned, they can be for a limited time event.
