Releasing two decades back, GTA San Andreas is still one of the most iconic games out there. On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, Former Rockstar Games developer, Obbe Vermeij, revealed an interesting fact regarding the game. He explained that the cities in San Andreas were supposed to be on three separate maps.

“The original plan was for the 3 cities to be on separate maps. The player would travel between the cities using trains and planes,” Vermeij said. The explanation left many people wondering if the gameplay experience would have been different if the decision had not changed.

Having the cities in three different maps would have also made it easier to work with PS2 memory limitations. “Just before the artists started working on the three maps, we had a final meeting at Rockstar North in which we changed our minds and decided to go for a big map after all. We still ended up doing city-specific pickups, police cars, and weather,” he further added.

What changed their mind about putting everything on a single map?

One person asked Vermeij if the memory was tight for the PlayStation, what made the team still go for a single big map containing all the cities. Vermeij responded, saying that the team thought driving to the city yourself would be much more fun.

He also debunked the popular myth regarding Bigfoot inside GTA San Andreas, saying the development team never added a Bigfoot. Most of the time, people looking for Bigfoot would hear CJ’s stomach growling due to hunger and think it was Bigfoot.

“There was no Bigfoot. People went out looking for it, and then CJ got hungry and his stomach would rumble. Loads of people thought the sound was made by Bigfoot,” Vermeij explained.
