Guild Esports, co-owned by football superstar David Beckham, recently announced the signing of an Australian team for Apex Legends named Serenity and is all set to compete in the upcoming Apex Legends tournament at the Esports World Cup.
The organization was formed back in 2020 when the world got the wind of video games and esports. David Beckham was not alone in jumping on this ship as few months later, Sergio Agüero also formed KRÜ Esports which was later joined by football legend Lionel Messi.
Announcement didn’t go as planned for Guild Esports
Instead of best wishes for the event, Guild Esports have received heavy backlash from the community. The reason was the use of AI art in the announcement, which had been quite famous recently and gained a similar amount of controversy around it.
The announcement post included names of the three players Buegy, Jesko, Legacy and the coach Winnie along with AI-generated images of three in-game characters, and fans were having a field day roasting the decision. Many said that even the stock images from the internet or 3D model render would have worked fine if they did not wish to commission custom art.
Some even offered to help for free, while a few others made fun of the fact that they were paid to return to the competitive Apex Legends at the Esports World Cup and still did not want to put money and effort into the announcement. It has been some time since the announcement was made public, and it is still up despite all the criticism.

While the Guild Esports have seen some success in regional events, it is yet to make a mark on the big stage. This incident, however, has further made it a laughingstock and the organization is yet to respond to the controversy. For now, it seems they are planning to keep quiet and let the matter cool down.
