As excitement builds around the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, rumours are intensifying about one of gaming’s most beloved open-world RPGs, Elden Ring, potentially making its way to the new platform. According to reports, Elden Ring, known for its challenging gameplay and vast open world, could be coming to the yet-unannounced Switch successor.

Notably, the port is said to include the popular Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, presenting what sources are calling a “definitive edition” for Nintendo’s next-generation console. Rather than FromSoftware, the original creators of Elden Ring, the port could be managed by Virtuos, a Singapore-based studio recognized for bringing major titles to Nintendo’s hybrid platforms.

Virtuos has previously ported games such as BioShock: The Collection and Assassin’s Creed Liberation Remastered to the Switch. Notably, they were also responsible for Dark Souls: Remastered—the only FromSoftware title on the current Switch. Given their experience with high-profile game adaptations, Virtuos seems a fitting choice for delivering Elden Ring to a Nintendo audience.

When will Elden Ring arrive?

Nintendo has yet to officially confirm the Switch 2, but reports suggest that third-party developers are already on board to support the new console. This comes with at least three games allegedly confirmed for its release. If Elden Ring joins this list, it would mark a significant step in bridging the gap between the Nintendo platform and the graphics-intensive RPGs traditionally reserved for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

The Switch 2 is expected to bring more powerful hardware to handle the demanding requirements of games like Elden Ring, which would otherwise be challenging to run on the current Switch model. As for the timeline, reports speculate that Elden Ring’s arrival on the Switch 2 could coincide with the console’s late 2025 launch. If true, this positioning might make Elden Ring one of the launch titles, giving Nintendo an enticing offer for fans of expansive RPGs.

However, despite the fervour around the possible release, the Switch 2 remains in the early stages, with reports from February 2024 indicating that Nintendo is focused on ramping up production. According to a Nikkei report, Nintendo’s manufacturing pace has reached levels comparable to 2016 when the original Switch was prepped for launch.
