Video game piracy is a very common occurrence and happens regardless of the type of game. It is one of the reasons why DRM exists as they try and prevent people from pirating the game as soon as it is released. Now many might be wondering if piracy is a way to get games for free, however, this isn’t the case as a popular piracy website recently got a donation of over $40,000 by a single person.

Operating under the name of Firgirl Repacks, the website is infamous for providing pirated video game packages in a compressed form. However, running a website that millions of people visit isn’t cheap, and often, the owner asks for donations to help cover the website's costs.

Among multiple contributions from various people, a person has donated $43,515 through bitcoins basically covering the costs in place of everyone, first spotted by The Gamer. This is what we meant by Piracy not being free as someone is always covering for others.

Piracy forces companies to use DRM software

As mentioned previously, Piracy is one of the reasons behind AAA games using DRMs like Denuvo which are quite hard to crack and takes a lot of time. While they prevent the game from being distributed for free on Day 1, they also affect the game’s performance wich is a very debated topic among the gaming community.

Why does Piracy exist?

Piracy is present due to many factors. In the case of video games, there are a few reasons which explain the cause. There are times when games aren’t available in a country, a good example is PlayStation’s PSN account requirement which cannot be completed in several countries, and hence, the games that need it aren’t available for purchase.

Often, people aren’t also able to pay for the games, or at least the price they release with, especially with every country having different economic conditions and AAA games nowadays overlooking them. The argument here is that people often use VPNs to purchase games at lower prices from these countries.
