Counter-Strike is among one of the longest-running esports titles and remains quite popular Bringing millions each day. However, the latest iteration of the game ‘CS2’ recently hit an all-time peak player count this year reaching 1.74 million. Released back in 2023, the game usually averages a million players daily.
This makes it the current highest player count of 2025 and the second-highest player count of the game in the history of Counter-Strike. Mostly known for its 5v5 tactical gameplay and massive esports scene, there is another side of the game quite popular among regular players.
That popularity comes from cosmetics. The game features loads of weapon skins, music kits, and more. These are tradable items that can often be sold on the market to buy other things in the game or even other games on Steam.
People questioning the sudden increase in CS2 player count
Many people are doubting the actual player count of the game as there are several bot-farming lobbies that come on to acquire weekly drops. Multiple videos previously surfacing online revealed complete farms using scripts to get weekly drops.
It’s hard to tell if that was the case as recently, the game also saw the Season 2 update for Premier which will start giving players new badges based on their final ranks. Furthermore, the day the 1.74 million player count was noted was February 16, which was on Sunday so the player count could also be legit.

Why is CS2 so popular?
CS2 checks a lot of boxes for many players who want to play games everyone is playing. It’s free-to-play, a huge esports community, cosmetics that can be sold or traded, and lower specifications, although CS2 is a bit demanding compared to CSGO.
Apart from all this, the game provides one of the most satisfactory gunplay, something that is quite crucial for any FPS game. There is also a learning curve that forces players to get better at aiming and learning spray patterns for different weapons, keeping them engaged.
