We are witnessing a gripping conclusion to the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. England were the first team to qualify for the semi-finals and South Africa have joined them from Group 2 after defeating co-hosts West Indies in a nervy final-over thriller in Antigua. With two more spots left to fill, India, Australia and Afghanistan are in contention from Group 1.

India are currently at the top of the table with four points and a healthy net run rate (NRR) of +2.425. They are just one win away from securing a berth in the last four and will aim to do so when they take on Australia at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia on Monday (June 24).

An embarrassing 21-run defeat to Afghanistan certainly dented the hopes of the Aussies of qualifying for the knockouts. Mitchell Marsh and Co. are out of the tournament if they fail to defeat an unbeaten India in their upcoming match. Afghanistan’s final match is against Bangladesh and the former is likely to gain two valuable points to solidify their playoff spot.

What happens if rain plays spoilsport in IND vs AUS clash?

The Men in Blue have a great chance to avenge their heartbreaking loss to Australia in the last two ICC finals - the WTC and the 2023 ODI World Cup. India needs a win to knock the 2021 champions out of the semi-final race. Looking at the weather conditions, rain is more likely to disrupt the match. And what happens if the game is abandoned without a result?

The IND vs AUS match is scheduled for morning at 10:30 AM (local). According to Accuweather, showers are expected before the match begins and the skies are unlikely to open up much after the match starts. This shows that there are chances of rain playing a spoilsport, and the match getting washed out is not far from possible.

If the match ended without a result due to bad weather in St Lucia, both teams will get one point each. In that case, the inaugural edition champions will seal their berth in the semis and Australia will have to book their return tickets.

This will help India to top the Group 1 points table with 5 points. Australia will end their Super 8 stage with 2 points. If Afghanistan defeats Bangladesh in their final match, the Asian side will qualify along with India from their group. On the other hand, if Bangladesh wins, Afghanistan will have to pack their bags as they have a lower NRR than Australia.
