In 2023, India came very close to winning the ICC ODI World Cup, but they lost heartbreakingly to Australia in the final at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium.  With a record-breaking 765 runs from 11 games at an average of 95.62, three hundred, and six fifties to his credit, Kohli was named Player of the Tournament.

Kohli was devastated by India's defeat in the final, though, and he avoided conversation during the post-match ceremony even though he had received the coveted award. Fans have been wondering since then if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the senior team, will play ODIs until the next World Cup.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli aim to maintain strong play

Nonetheless, India's recent triumph in the ICC Champions Trophy has almost made it possible for the two to play on till the 2027 World Cup. In the competition, Kohli was once again in excellent form, including game-winning runs against Australia and Pakistan. Meanwhile skipper Rohit delivered a spectacular innings of 76 (83) in the final against New Zealand after struggling in the league rounds.

His innings helped India won their third Champions Trophy after chasing down the target of 252 in 49 overs. Both Kohli and Rohit will want to maintain their strong play and have another chance at the most coveted trophy in cricket in 2027, since the next major ODI tournament is two years away.
