Match 15 of the CPL (Caribbean Premier League) 2024 witnessed an epic battle between Barbados Royals and Trinbago Knight Riders. Needing 11 runs off the last six balls, the Knight Riders pulled off an incredible two-wicket win at Kensington Oval on Friday, September 14.

Chasing a target of 157, Kieron Pollard’s team did not have a great start to their innings. They lost both openers Sunil Narine and Jason Roy in quick succession for cheap scores. Later, Shaqkere Parris and Nicholas Pooran put on a short partnership to bring them back into the game.

However, Maheesh Theekshana picked up another wicket, getting rid of the opposition's top three batters and changing the momentum of the game. Pooran and Parris departed for 35 runs and the onus was on skipper Pollard to take his team over the line.

The Caribbean giant failed to find his rhythm and was eventually dismissed by Naveen-ul-Haq after making 3 off 7 balls. The Afghanistan pacer bowled a length delivery outside off, inviting a slog from Pollard towards the leg side. However, the right-hander managed only an inside edge and the ball smashed the stumps.

Akeal Hosein's all-round prowess dampens Barbados' fighting spirit

Needing 37 off 22 balls, Pollard's wicket was a huge turning point for Barbados. A couple of boundaries from Akeal Hosein in the 19th over eased the pressure on Knight Riders. The equation was 11 runs needed in the final over and Barbados captain Rovman Powell trusted Jason Holder to do the job.

The tall pacer dismissed Hosein on the fourth ball, adding more drama to the encounter. With four runs needed off the last two balls, Terrance Hinds hit a six to seal the game for the Knight Riders. Hosein, who scored crucial 20 runs off 10 balls and took two wickets, was adjudged Player of the Match.

“We were just trying to stay calm, similar situation to Antigua where we didn’t win. The belief was there. The trophy has eluded us for a couple of years but we’re working really hard, all hands on deck, we don’t want to leave it for anyone else,” said Hosein after the match.
