Days after New Zealand was humiliated 2-0 in a Test series in Sri Lanka, New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee announced his decision to leave as New Zealand's Test captain. On October 16, New Zealand will play India in a three-match Test series that will be captained by opening batsman Tom Latham. In the best interests of the squad, Southee stated he made the decision to resign as captain. Tom Latham, captained New Zealand in nine Tests between 2020 and 2022 and will resume the post for the second time in his career.

"Captaining the BlackCaps in a format that’s so special to me, has been an absolute honour and a privilege,” Tim Southee said, in a statement.“I have always tried to put the team first throughout my career and I believe this decision is the best for the team. I believe the way I can best serve the team moving forward is focusing on my performances on the field and getting back to my best, to continue taking wickets and helping New Zealand win Test matches," he added as per India Today.

New Zealand yet to announce squad for Test series against India

In 2022 Kane Williamson took the decision of leaving his captaincy which led to Tim Southee’s appointment of leading New Zealand. Until now, Tim Southee was captain for 14 Test matches in which New Zealand had won six matches and lost six while two ended in draw. Tim Southee as team captain, was unable to play at his peak level.

Captain Southee surpassed his career average of 28.99 by taking 35 wickets at an average of 38.60 in 14 matches. Even with 49 overs bowled, Southee managed to take just two wickets in the two Test matches and played in Sri Lanka. New Zealand coach claimed that Southee would be a key component of their plans going ahead in Test cricket and commended him for his leadership abilities.

So far, New Zeland have not yet revealed their team for the Test series in India, New Zealand has stated that Southee will be a member of a "strong 15-man squad" for the difficult task on the subcontinent.
