New Zealand were set a target of 275 to win the first Test match in Galle against Sri Lanka. Former skipper Kane Williamson was batting well on 30 off 45 balls before he committed hara-kiri to give his wicket away.

The incident occurred in the second ball of the 17th over with Prabath Jayasuriya bowling to Williamson. The former Kiwi skipper was frustrated with the consistent bowling from the Lankan spinners. This is when he decided to give the bowler the charge and take him on.

Prabath Jayasuriya gave the ball lot of flight and beat the batter. By this time Williamson was already down the wicket as the ball turned away from him. Kusal Mendis collected the ball with ease and took off the bails. It was the second wicket to fall for the visiting side on the 4th day of the 1st Test.

Ajaz Patel spins New Zealand back into the game

Saturday was a rest day during the Sri Lanka vs New Zealand Test match due to the presidential elections. When the game began, the home team were placed 237/4 with Angelo Mathews batting along with skipper Dhananjaya De Silva.

New Zealand left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel got the first wicket of the 4th day by dismissing De Silva for 40. Kusal Mendis came out with aggressive intent as he scored 23 off 30 balls with 3 hits to the fence. The Sri Lankan wicketkeeper was bowled by Patel in the 84th minute.

From there the Sri Lankan side kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Angelo Mathews also fell to Patel for 50 caught by Tom Latham. With the wickets of Lahiru Kumara and Ramesh Mendis, spinner Ajaz Patel ended with figures of 6/90 from his 30 overs. The home team were all out for 309 and ended with an overall lead of 274.

Needing 275 to win, Devon Conway was bowled by Asitha Fernando for 4 to give the home a great start. Tom Latham and Kane Williamson then added 45 runs from 14.4 overs before the former Kiwi skipper was out. At the time of writing New Zealand were 60/2 with Rachin Ravindra batting with Latham with one more day to go.
