Team India booked their place in the Super 8 stages of the T20 World Cup with a win on Wednesday over co-hosts United States of America. Suryakumar Yadav’s fifty helped India chase down the target of 111 with 7 wickets and 10 balls to spare.

With five overs left to play, India needed 35 runs from 30 balls. Aaron Jones the USA skipper was seen having a word with the umpire. It was at that point that umpire Paul Reiffel decided to award India five penalty runs.

According to the new rules, the five penalty runs awarded to India was due to the new stop clock rules. If the bowling team fails to start an over inside the 60-second time frame on different occasions during their innings, the batting team will be given 5 runs.

What does the ICC rule say?

The stop clock rule came into effect to make cricket more faster and to avoid time-wasting during the game. The rule states “The clock will be used to regulate the amount of time taken between overs. If the bowling team is not ready to bowl the next over within 60 seconds of the previous over being completed, a five-run penalty will be imposed the third time it happens in an innings."

India won the toss and chose to bowl first and restricted USA to a challenging score of 110 on the board. Nitish Kumar with 27 and Steven Taylor with 24 were the best batters for the home team. Arshdeep Singh who was given the man of the match picked his career best T20 figures of 4/9.

Virat Kohli was out for a first ball duck while Rohit Sharma fell for 3 as Saurabh Netravalkar struck two early blows. Rishabh Pant batted well for 18 before Ali Khan disturbed his stumps to make it 39/3.

Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube then joined forces to add 72 unbeaten runs for the 4th wicket. The right-handed Yadav was not out on 50 off 49 balls with two fours and two sixes, while Dube was not out on 31 off 35 balls with one four and one six.

The Indians will play their final match of Group A against Canada on Saturday in Florida. It is already confirmed that the Indian team is set to face Australia once again. The huge encounter will be played in the Super 8 stages at the Darren Sammy Stadium in St Lucia on the 24th of June.
