The sports world once again witnessed a fierce rivalry between India and Pakistan, but this time it was not in cricket. Billions of people in both countries were on their toes as India's Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem battled it out for the gold medal in the javelin throw event at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Thursday, August 8.

It was Nadeem who emerged victorious and he did so in a very emphatic fashion, setting a new Olympic record. He threw a massive 92.97 meters in his second attempt to seal the title and became the first Pakistani to win a gold medal at the Olympics. On the other hand, Chopra managed to win the silver medal with a season-best of 89.45 meters despite not being fully fit and only one attempt was considered legal.

Chopra and Nadeem's mothers win hearts

Appreciation poured in from all quarters for both of them. In fact, this must be the first time a Pakistani has received so much love from India and vice versa. Meanwhile, apart from the duo's heroics, it was their mothers' comments following their sons' success in the biggest sporting event that won more hearts.

"We are happy with the silver. The one who got the gold (Arshad Nadeem) is also my child," Chopra’s mother Saroj Devi had said after the final, speaking to ANI.

The motion across the border was mutual as Raziah Parveen, Nadeem's mother, said: “They are not only friends but brothers and I also pray for Neeraj that he gets more success.”

The comments made by both mothers swayed everyone, including former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar. Reacting to Neeraj Chopra's mother's words, Akhtar said these words can only be said by a mother.

"Gold jis ka hai, wo bhi hamara he larka hai". Yeh baat sirf aik maa he keh sakti hai. Amazing. (The one who won gold, is also our son. This can only be said by a mother. Amazing.)," tweeted Akhtar.
