Shubman Gill breaks major records during The Oval Test 2025 against England (X)
Overview
- Shubman Gill continued to amass runs in the Test series against England in 2025
- The right-handed batter became the Indian batter with the most runs in a Test series
- He rose up the ranks in many other records with his controlled batting in the Oval Test 2025
Shubman Gill's terrific season with the bat in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 continued, as he got a good start in The Oval Test before rain interrupted the match. After remaining unbeaten with a score of 15(23), Gill became the Indian captain to score the most runs in a Test series, and rose above in many such unique records in the longest format of the game.
Gill now features in the elite list of batters such as Don Bradman, Graham Gooch, Joe Root, Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli, and many others in major Test records. He is now third in the list of captains with the most runs in a Test series behind Don Bradman in the Ashes 1936/37 and Graham Gooch in the India Tour of England 1990.

The Indian skipper is only behind Sunil Gavaskar in the list of Indian batters with the most runs in a single series. He needs only 42 runs to surpass the legendary batter in this regard. In the list of batters with the most runs in a Test series between India and England, Gill is third and behind Graham Gooch and Joe Root.
While Gill needs just 20 runs to surpass Gooch's record from the 1990 series against India, he needs just five runs to get past Joe Root's tally in the 2021/22 series at home against India. If Gill bats with great control and at the pace at which he is currently scoring runs, many other records could be broken in the next few days.
