Gautam Gambhir is reportedly set to take charge of the Indian cricket team after the end of Rahul Dravid's tenure with the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024. According to reports, Gambhir and WV Raman are the only two candidates who have applied for the post of Team India head coach, with the former having an edge in the race.

Although Gambhir doesn’t have prior coaching experience, he has built a strong portfolio over the years. His recent success with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) was the main reason why the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has considered him for the high-profile role.

Meanwhile, according to some sources, the KKR mentor has put forward some demands before assuming the role. The first and foremost requirement was to have complete control over the team. Secondly, he has requested the right to choose his own support staff, including batting, bowling and fielding coaches.

Is Gambhir mulling to snub Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma?

Gambhir's most controversial demand was to drop some senior cricketers from the team. Big stars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami are included in the list. The performance of the veteran players in the 2025 Champions Trophy will be closely monitored.

Even though Kohli and Gambhir have shared some friendly moments during IPL 2024, fans will not easily forget their past rivalry. If reports are to be believed and Gambhir sticks to his demands, it will lead to a massive outcry from fans on social media.

Gambhir also reportedly advocated for separate teams for limited-over formats and Test cricket. He is understood to have stressed the need to start preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup immediately. The appointment of the new head coach is expected to be announced by the BCCI after India’s campaign at the T20 World Cup later this month.
