Kolkata Knight Riders had won their third Indian Premier League title in 2024. Shreyas Iyer was praised for his captaincy skills while Sunil Narine and the rest of the old KKR guard and came up with useful contributions. Gautam Gambhir who spent two years as the mentor with Lucknow Super Giants came back to KKR ahead of the 2024 season. 

Fast bowler Harshit Rana has now come out and praised the KKR mentor during a chat on a podcast. Harshit Rana said, “Look, I feel Gautam Gambhir has left a lot of things to make his comeback. And he got so involved that I can tell you he sacrificed a lot to help KKR win the trophy.”

The last time KKR won the title was in 2014 when they were captained by Gautam Gambhir. The 42-year-old had left his political journey behind and came back to cricket and didn’t contest the 2024 Indian general elections. 

Gautam Gambhir set for Indian coaching role

According to the reports, the former Indian star Gautam Gambhir is set to be announced as the new Indian coach. The former opening batter will replace Rahul Dravid at the helm of affairs at the end of the T20 World Cup

The reports also stated Gautam Gambhir will want to bring his own background staff. It is learned that Gambhir wants to change the entire staff and made this one of the conditions to the BCCI before accepting the new role. 

The announcement could be made at the end of the T20 World Cup with the final to be played on 29th June. Team India are set to play their Super-8 matches from the 20th of June with their first encounter against Afghanistan. 

Gautam Gambhir was part of the Indian side which won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. His 75 in the final against Pakistan played a key role in India winning an ICC title for the first time in a long time. The former opener also scored a crucial 97 to aid India to win the ODI World Cup in 2011. 

India’s biggest challenge this year will be the tour to Australia where they will play 5 Test matches. Gautam Gambhir if selected as the coach will want to win in Australia as the coach has not been able to do the same as a player.
