The IPL 2025 mega auction, held in Jeddah on November 24 and 25, turned out to be a historic event for the Punjab Kings (PBKS), who executed a full-scale squad overhaul. With the largest purse of ₹110.5 crore among all franchises, PBKS dominated the auction and made headlines with their strategic splurges and bold acquisitions.
Ahead of the auction, PBKS made a clear statement by retaining just two uncapped players: all-rounder Shashank Singh (₹5.5 crore) and wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh (₹4 crore). This left them with a clean slate and maximum flexibility, including four Right to Match (RTM) cards — the most of any team. The franchise's vision for a fresh start was further underscored by their appointment of Ricky Ponting as head coach.
Punjab Kings assemble star-studded squad for IPL 2025!
Leading the charge is the acquisition of Indian batting sensation Shreyas Iyer for a staggering ₹26.75 crore, making him the second-most expensive player in IPL history. The move not only fortifies PBKS’ batting lineup but positions Iyer as a potential captaincy contender. Notably, he led Kolkata Knight Riders to their 3rd IPL trophy in 2024.
The Kings retained star Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh for ₹18 crore through the Right to Match (RTM) card. Joining him is the IPL’s highest wicket-taker, Yuzvendra Chahal, also snapped up for ₹18 crore, ensuring Punjab's bowling attack remains lethal.
PBKS didn’t stop there, bolstering their squad with a mix of seasoned all-rounders and emerging talents. Australian powerhouses Marcus Stoinis (₹11 crore) and Glenn Maxwell (₹4.2 crore) bring experience and versatility. Maxwell’s return to Punjab marks a nostalgic homecoming, while Stoinis’ dual role as a middle-order batter and medium pacer adds depth.
In addition to these marquee signings, on Day 1 PBKS invested in promising young talent. Nehal Wadhera, an aggressive batter with potential as an Impact Player, was secured for ₹4.2 crore. Harpreet Brar, a reliable spinner, and lower-order option, was a steal at ₹1.5 crore. The Kings also strengthened their wicketkeeping department with Vishnu Vinod (₹95 lakh), while Vijaykumar Vyshak (₹1.8 crore) and Yash Thakur (₹1.8 crore) were brought in to add depth to the pace department.
On day 2 of the auction Jeddah, Punjab Kings made some bold calls. They bought South African allrounder Marco Jansen for INR 5.75 crore and Josh Inglish for Rs 2.60 crore. They also bought Kiwi pacer Lockie Ferguson for Rs 2 crore, Harnoor Pannu for INR 30 Lakhs and Azmatullah Omarzai for INR 1.50 crore.
